Accents of Forms

Artwork by Poonam Singh Title: Conch Series- The Reverberation Artwork by Jeetendra Kumar Title: Modern Times When a couple bond in their creative visual language, then a language of gestures is formed. Poonam and Jeetendra Kumar have transformed their visualization into multiple references of forms in creative manifestations of visual art and sculptural forms. “Love of animals, is a universal impulse, a common ground, on which all of us may meet. By loving and understanding animals perhaps we humans shall come to understand each other.” – Louis J Camuti Poonam Singh’s paintings have spiritual leanings inspired by Indian philosophy in her ‘Conch Series’ that tend to evoke peace and harmony using symbolism that encompasses humanity as a whole. She explores her inner emotions and spirituality using the conch (shell) as symbolic of purity for the environment and that of a divine energy that resonates with the circle of life. “Sculpture is the best comment that a painter can make on painting.” – Pablo Picasso Her proficiency and interest lies in creating sculptural forms of humans and animals in clay and terracotta to emphasize on the organic nature and to connect with earth. Her practice is a tactile process that feels like a meditative experience in an approach to follow traditional Indian folk style and follows a contemporary narrative. Jeetendra Kumar has dabbled with Abstraction that are thematic in intent, using swirls and patterns, representing a “symphony of emotions”. In few works, he creates ‘unbridled movement’ to portray feelings that reflect on the question of time against the rigidity of routine as inspired by Charlie Chaplin’s classic film, ‘Modern Times’. These series with sweeping lines are creative manifestations of chaos in our times, to include animal and human forms in his compositions. He attempts to portray “hope and opportunities in the complex and uncertain modern times”. Partial to the “strong, energetic” and representing beauty and elegance, the horse, is “ a powerful symbol of dynamic movement, the assertion of force” and a fundamental subject related to his work. His preferred colour palette are meant to radiate positivity with blues, reds and oranges that merge into “Oneness”. Poonam Singh  Poonam Singh was born in Bihar. Imprints of Reminiscence

“Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us.” – Oscar Wilde Runa Biswas’s interplay of colours and forms re-create the reminiscence of childhood memories and a youth gone by. A world of simple needs, fun and laughter, where children were engaged in play with friends. Innocent childhood friendships too that are close to her heart, have featured in this collection of works. There is a yearning to go back in time as seen in the choice of subjects with a playful connotation, inspired by European and Indian style of miniature paintings. Runa Biswas has created a visual vocabulary inspired by Indian folk lore, that evoke the child in the viewer. Growing up with stories of Bengal’s own fairy tales book of Thakurmar Jhuli translated as grandmother’s bag of enchanted tales akin to Hans Anderson’s in the Western World! The protagonists in some of her visual narratives being the mischievous and adventurous Neel Kamal and Laal Kamal. As the child growing up in a fantasy world, the first experience with cinema from a bygone era is the Itinerant play of the bioscope that creates a bond with children who peek through the windows of the unusual contraption on wheels, while music is played on a gramophone placed on top. Textural compositions developing a particular style of contemporary folk art, Runa Biswas has created a niche that is endearing. Like footprints left behind, in the sands of time, Biswas has captured imprints of reminiscence in her visual narratives. A DREAMER’S WORLD

<!-- --> ShoebDastagir translates his dreams and metaphysical thoughts into compositionsto create what appears as nebulous in his narrative, with multiple references of aquatic life. The child in him is apparent as his renditions become an extension of his impressions on the aquatic world to leave him in a calm frame of mind. A treasure of colourful and most exotic creatures in a panorama of vivid colours that thrive in water, being the source of life, is what inspires the artist. Describing his favourites in this collection, Dastagir states, “I've chosen three types of fish that I find most beautiful. The geometry of the Oscar fish beautiful with its mottled tiger stripes to a copper-toned body, there are a varied selection of colours and patterns. The Brunei Beauty or spot fin betta that sports a vivid red colouring, is a mouthbrooder of the labyrinth family of fishes originally found in lazy shallow streams. The Bumblebee Goby, a tiny and beautiful fish in yellow and black, has origins from the Mud Skipper that has a lineage in the sea. I love the shy, delicate nature of fishes with movements that glide and shimmy through water, their source of life.” Fish paintings depict positive connotations as in the origin of life and in some cultures, the aquatic vertebrate signifies spiritual growth, transformation or re-birth. In Madhubani style of traditional Indian folk art, the significance of fish meant abundance, fertility and good fortune. On a philosophical note, water being the source of life, with fluid movements of the fishis a metaphor for someone to mould himself through all trials and to adapt in life situations. “In the depts of the sea lies the answers to life’ greatest questions.” - Unknown SHOEB DASTAGIR <!-- --> SHOEB DASTAGIR, born in 1985, spent most of his childhood in Bahrain and a few early years in Kodaikanal and in Bengaluru. A BFAat Chitrakala Parishath and later an attempt of Diploma in Animation at Cavalier Institute, Kalyan Nagar, Bengaluru was not completed due to being diagnosed as a Schizophrenic. In that state of mind, “with heightened perception”, Dastagir has used his condition, that leads to divergent thinking and unusual associations, towardshis artistic expression. Dastagir’s first solo exhibition with 35 paintings was in the year 2015 and additional to it, another solo show with 25 works in 2016 at Belaku Gallery, Rangoli Metro Art Centre-MG Road, Bengaluru.
